Parking a crisis in Tongaat

Residents, businessmen bemoan lack of parking space.

Illegal parking and a lack of parking bays is causing congestion on the Tongaat Main Road.

Residents are complaining that the lack of control over parking is creating chaos and affecting businesses on the road and in Ganies Mall.

Tongaat resident Shaun Govender said the majority of residents leave the town to do their shopping.

“The economy of the town will suffer due to lack of parking spaces,” said Govender.

Another resident Bala Moodley said he understands that Tongaat is small but the population is growing and something needs to be done.

KD Bedding driver Gavin Frederick said businesses in Ganies Mall do not have delivery areas.

“We then find ourselves causing an obstruction in the road,” said Fredericks.

Ganies Mall manager Suraya Ganie declined to comment on the issue.

Another businessman who asked not to be named, said the situation is getting out of hand.

“We are allowed to park only for two hours. So what about the business people, should we drive around every two hours to avoid getting a fine?” asked the entrepreneur.
