Fifty pre-school children in Mandeni are without stationery, cupboards, heaters and toys after criminals broke into their school last week.
Teachers at Mangethe Primary School arrived last Monday morning to find windows broken and a gas cylinder and stove had also been stolen.
Pre-school teacher Sivy Naidoo said they had paid for the things by raising the funds.
“Now it is all stolen. The education department did not supply these things to us.We are now worried about our safety,” said Naidoo.
The school has 564 pupils with most coming from a very poor backgrounds.
There is now a greater chance of school fees increasing as the principal Oral Adams said they would need to hire a security guard.
“We are facing a very challenging situation because half of our pupils do not pay school fees. Now we need a security guard. Increasing fees will be a problem for most of the parents,” said Adams
No arrests have been made and Mandeni SAPS are still investigating.
