Hundreds of blankets for Orphan Fund

Boost for Soup, Socks and Snuggles campaign.

Last week Friday the Warm the World (W.T.W) organisation in partnership with Ellie’s arrived at the Courier office with a truckload of blankets for the Orphan Fund.

The Dischem Foundation and Ellie’s donated boxes filled with 452 thick gorgeous colourful blankets for the Fund to distribute to the needy.

Dorienne Levitt from W.T.W was visiting Ballito and the Orphan Fund’s Soup, Socks and Snuggles campaign appealed to her.

The Warm The World organisation has donated and distributed around 10 000 blankets already just this winter.

The organisation encourages the public to help them by knitting or crocheting squares that are sewn together to make beautiful blankets.

They distribute needles and wool to anyone wanting to knit squares. Even hawkers in Hilbrow wanting to knit while they run their stalls have joined the cause.

Baskets of needles and wool are placed in the waiting rooms of doctors, dentists, lawyers, beauticians, hairdressers, school staff rooms and coffee shops.

This allows people the opportunity to knit squares while they wait and the completed squares are collected and made into blankets.

“Some of the blankets come out so magnificently that they are held back and auctioned off at a later stage for up to R3000,” said Ellies Financial Director, Michael Levitt.

The money is used to buy more wool and needles and to pay the ladies who knit and sew the blankets.

They are warming the world one square at a time.
