Luthuli museum celebrates World Environment Day
Pupils learned about looking after the environment at the World Environment Day celebration at the Luthuli Museum
Pupils from 15 different primary schools were taught to raise their voices, not the sea level, at the World Environment Day celebration at the Luthuli Museum recently.
Guest speaker Gcobisa Feke, a health and safety co-ordinator from Dolphin Coast Landfill Management company urged pupils to be creative, to tell relatives or make up a song – all actions which would contribute toward raising awareness about global warming and rising sea levels.
Earlier she helped pupils to understand what global warming is, how it is caused and what each member of society can do in a small way to stop the effects. She told pupils to plant trees and to always remember the three R’s – reduce, reuse and recycle.
Then it was time to hear from the pupils. Six representatives from different eco clubs each gave a short presentation on their activities at their school.
Armed with black bin bags and gloves the pupils then took to Nokukhanya Luthuli Street and began cleaning up.
Picking up everything from beer cans and plastic packets to boxes, the pupils made a meaningful contribution to cleaning up the environment.
In total 21 bags of rubbish were collected from the area directly outside the museum.
