Tongaat police arrest two for murder of martial arts fighter

An off-duty policeman arrested two murder suspects this week.

Tongaat SAPS have arrested two people in connection with the murder of Tongaat resident Tyson Murugan, who was killed last month.

Murugan (24) was attacked and murdered, apparently for his cellphone, while walking home along Gopalall Hurbans Road on June 3.

Tongaat SAPS media liaison lieutenant Mandy Govender posted on the Tongaat Facebook group yesterday saying that arrests had been made.

According to Govender, an off-duty officer, sergeant TM Govender tracked down the suspects following tip-offs from informants.

One of the men was apprehended in Emona, Tongaat and the other was found in Gwala’s Farm.

Murugan’s cellphone, which was stolen after he was stabbed, was found on one of the men during the arrest.

“We are proud of you Sgt Govender. You are an asset to Tongaat SAP. Keep up the good work,” posted lieutenant Govender.

Govender also posted that the men are co-operating with the police.
