Seven left in Slimline pool

Seven contestants are still standing after a cold night in the Slimline pool at The Junction shopping centre.

The Slimline ‘Win a swimming Pool’ competition stepped up a notch last night at around 8pm, when the 13 remaining competitors had to remove all their extra clothing apart from their wetsuits.

By 8am on Sunday, five had given up on winning a brand new pool from Slimline pools. The contest has been going on for over 50 hours.

“It’s been a long emotional roller coaster ride for these guys,” said Specialised Rescue Unit’s Quentin Power, who is the safety officer for the competition.

Power said the contestants all agreed to up the difficulty last night to ensure a winner is crowned before Monday.

Power had the competitors face isolation, float on their backs and stomachs and other exercises to break down their spirits.

“During the night we had them face a number of personal challenges,” said Power.

The remaining seven were looking upbeat as it warmed up this morning but their bodies were beginning to show signs of fatigue.

According to Power, low body temperatures and small pupils were tell-tale signs that exhaustion was beginning to set in.

David Meyer, one of the contestants that bowed out after 36 hours in the pool, was there to support early this morning.

“The competition is awesome, I made some new friends and that is what this is really all about . I kind of want to go home to my family, but I feel like I have a new one here,” said Meyer.

Reinier Claasen is definately looking like a firm favourite to win.

“Im feeling good this morning, I am ready for this,” he said with a grin.

Get down to The Junction and lend some support to the last competitors, who look determined to battle through another day.
