Brazilian surfer out of danger
No longer competing Do Carmo donates his surfboard to charity.
Brazilian surfer David do Carmo has been discharged from hospital following a nasty surfing accident in the Mr Price Pro Ballito yesterday.
Do Carmo was taken to Alberlito hospital yesterday afternoon after being hit in the face by his surfboard while trying to land a big aerial manoeuvre.
“He was discharged last night after an MRI found no fractures on his face,” said Mr Price Pro spokesperson Pierre Tostee.
The Brazilian will not take any further part in the competition, even though he had qualified for round four which was completed today.
“I chatted to him this morning, he is watching the competition. He donated his board to charity a little earlier, so that was really awesome of him,” said Tostee.
Do Carmo came out of the incident relatively unscathed, other than a few stitches and a swollen mouth.
“He does not have a concussion but he was briefed on the symptoms to look out for. He will go for a follow up tomorrow.”
Tostee thanked Netcare 911 for their great response at the beach and in the hospital.
“Alberlito were very thorough, they did a great job from the beach, where they immobilised David and gave him oxygen, to treating him in the hospital. All measures were taken to ensure he was alright,” Tostee said.
Round five is currently underway and surfers are battling it out for the eight slots in the quarterfinals.
Tiago Pires, Filipe Toledo and Dillon Perillo have already claimed a spot in the quarters.
