After almost three years of date shifting and impatient drivers, the end is finally in sight.

The South African National Roads Agency (SANRAL) has confirmed the Ballito N2 interchange should be finished by the end of the month.

Final touches are being done on the main cross road and off and on-ramps, opening the interchange for full traffic use within the next three weeks.

Project manager Zandile Nene said minor works will then be completed.

“We still have to complete the final road surfacing, two more sets of traffic signals, final road markings and landscaping.”

Outstanding kerbs and sidewalks, permanent road signs and guardrails will also be finished in the coming weeks.

Nene acknowledged that traffic volumes have been increasing, but said it should improve once the interchange is fully operational.

“Any new developments in the area will no doubt add to the peak morning and afternoon traffic flows.”

She said navigating the interchange at night should also be easier once road signs and signals are functioning.

“Pedestrians will be accommodated on the new concrete sidewalks and the new street lighting should be operational within the next month.”
