Five arrests at M4 protest

Armed police officers stationed along M4

Police officers officially have the housing protest on the M4 under strict control.

Tongaat SAPS officers have placed five protesters under arrest for public violence.

Provincial SAPS officers had to be called in for back up to diffuse the violent protest, where residents of the Thuthukani Seatides informal settlement used burnt tyres and sugarcane to barricade the road this morning.

The strip between Desainager and Westbrook was closed for about two hours, as about 300 angry residents stormed the road demanding houses.

They are accusing councillor Mxolisi Mzumbovu of selling houses built on Hammands Farm, near Verulam, which they believe were meant to be allocated to them.

This is the second protest in the area in less than a month.

Provincial SAPS media liaison captain Thulani Zwane confirmed the arrests.

“They will appear in the Verulam Magistrates’ Court  soon. Police are monitoring the situation.”
