Thousands stolen while they slept
Ballito residents encounter burglars in their bedroom.
Two Ballito residents woke to find a strange man standing in their bedroom standing between them and their baby’s crib last week.
The man was clutching a handbag and an iPad. In the early hours of July 8 two men broke into the family’s home on Compensation Beach Road and stole valuables worth about R26 000 while the family of four slept.
“What really shook me was that my iPad was hidden between me and my eight-month-old baby in his crib crib and the laptops and everything else were near my son (3), so these men had been so close to my children. I have no idea why we never heard a thing,” said the wife, who wishes to remain anonymous.
The family recently moved from Sheffield into a double story house where they occupy the bottom half of the house while other tenants live on the upper level. The burglars had managed to cut through the burglar guards with bolt cutters and climb through an already semi-broken window into the kitchen. They stole two laptops, an iPad, a tablet, wallet, handbag, Samsung S3 Mini and cash.
When they reached for the handbag it made a noise, waking her husband.
He chased after them but the two men jumped through the window and over the fence dropping a pair of his work shoes in the process.
She said they were worried this may have been an inside job as only people who have been to the house would know which window was semi-broken and where valuables were to be found.
The robbery was reported to Umhlali SAPS who came later that day to take fingerprints.
If anyone comes into contact with someone trying to sell any of the above stolen items or attempt to have them repaired please contact Umhlali SAPS on 032 947 9700.
There were four confirmed house break-ins on Compensation Beach Road last week with laptops and electronics being stolen.
Two confirmed arrests have been made by the Umhlali SAPS, which may be linked to the robberies.
The husband will be going to Umhlali police station this week to possibly identify the thieves.
