A surfing extravaganza in Durban
The North Coast Boardriders Club surf up a storm.
The North Coast Boardriders Club tag team surfed into the finals and achieved an overall fourth place in the Durban July Surfing Extravaganza hosted at the Bay of Plenty in Durban on July 11 to 13.
This three day 2A Rated Pro Surf Tour event featured Men, Women, Pro Junior Boys and Girls as well as U18, U16 and U14 divisions for boys and girls.
The contest offered over R50 000 in prize money across the ten divisions.
With all the top surfing clubs competing in the event, the North Coast Boardriders team, consisting of Allan Johns, Jess van Schalkwyk, Braiden Coates, Richard Kidd and Jaco Kapp, managed to put on a great performance in the tricky conditions to reach the finals.
In the Open men’s division , Richard Kidd surfed incredibly well and reached the semi finals with Allan Johns and Jaco Kapp being eliminated in the quarter finals but still accumulating some valuable points towards the Pro Surf Tour rankings.
Umhlanga’s Beyrick de Vries, currently ranked no. 39 on the ASP Qualifying Series and 10th on the SSA Pro Surf Tour, grabbed the title in the Men’s final from Quiksilver team rider Dan Redman of Umdloti.
Lizzard team rider Bevan Willis of Ballito won the U18 Boys final with Jade Mets of Salt Rock taking second and Olivia Brand of Umdloti taking fourth place in the U18 Girls finals.
2014 SA Junior Team member and Lizzy surfer Cana Foster of Umdloti took the U16 Girls final with Gabi Lailvaux of Westbrook finishing in second place.
Umdloti’s Christian Brand secured third place and Calvin Goor of Salt Rock taking fourth in the U14 Boys final.
Lailvaux also entered the U14 Girls division coming third in the finals.
