Using fun to learn at Protec Tongaat

Building steam cars!

Protec Tongaat pupils spent their school holidays taking part in a variety of workshops.

Grade 10 pupils built steam cars using kits designed by University of KZN Professor Bindeni from the mechanical engineering faculty.

Protec Tongaat manager Marion Takis said applying maths and physical science concepts in a practical and fun way develops good team work, problem solving and communications skills.

“It enables these young people to test their skills and aptitude in engineering and increase their understanding of technology and the environment,” said Takis.

The cars were judged on the number of metres they could travel.

The top three teams will participate in the steam car challenge at the FFS Science Expo on August 1.

The grade 11 pupils participated in a water conservation workshop, learning about the scarcity of water, its properties and the importance of conserving this valuable resource.

Three teams were selected to participate in the Saicer regional bridge building competition on August 7.

The grade nine intervention programme has been introduced by Protec to prepare pupils for successful entry into Protec next year.

The pupils attended a week of extra lessons in maths and English and pupils with potential will be selected to attend classes in the third term.

Protec thanked their financial partners including the North Coast Courier, Altech, Tongaat Hullet, Bearing Man Group, Sugar Industry Trust Fund for education, Sun International Community Development Trust Fund and FFS Refiners.
