Public Protector surprises Tongaat
Residents upset about "lack of notice" for high-profile visit
Public Protector advocate Thuli Madonsela sprung a surprise visit on Hambanathi Township residents yesterday.
Madonsela was in the area to give feedback on complaints lodged by residents in 2012, when she last visited the area.
However, residents were unimpressed by the lack of proper notice of Madonsela’s visit.
In a taxi from Tongaat to Hambanathi passengers accused ward councillor Nompumelelo Mabaso of not notifying them.
“She cannot just come here without letting us know. If I knew about it I would not have gone to work,” said a resident who did not want to be named.
KZN public protector’s office representative advocate Mlandeli Nkosi said they sent a team to inform the residents two days before Madonsela came.
“I must admit it was very short notice,” said Nkosi.
Residents were given the chance to interact with Madonsela through a town-hall forum, and she promised to follow up on their grievances.
