Sugar Dance Hip hop crews are off to Johannesburg

Five street dance crews will be competing in the Hip Hop Dayz competition at the end of July.

Julie Robert owner of Sugar Dance Studios in collaboration with the dynamic dance duo Craig and Mandy Bullock are making moves to uplift dance on the North Coast.

The alliance brought about the forming of local hip-hop dance crews which will train together to compete in future competitions, starting with Hip-Hop Dayz in Johannesburg at the end of July.

Craig Bullock, founder and owner of DanceWeb studios in Johannesburg, is a director on the board of South African Dance Teachers Association (SADTA) and has recently been appointed as a national examiner and international adjudicator – the first South African international judge.

Being a primary role player in the dance community Craig is pushing to raise standard of dance to an international level.

The couple have recently moved from Johannesburg to Salt Rock with their children.

“We are about five years behind the rest of the world but with an untapped market of talent in KZN, Craig and Mandy just seem to be in the right place at the right time to facilitate the growth of dance in the area,” said Robert.

Bullock recently hosted a dance workshop to find dancers for the Hip-Hop crews.

Five full crews were formed with children ranging from age seven to 17 – seven boys and 22 girls.

Bullock worked with each group for four hours each – creating their two-minute routines with formations.

“Once the kids were performing their routine in unison he would put them in height order and create formations. He was like a basket ball coach with his little white board plotting each position and formation,” said Robert.
