A whale of a time

A whale was guided back out to sea after swimming too close to shore.

A large whale was spotted early this morning swimming unusually close to shore near Compensation Beach.

It appeared to be in distress, swimming on its side with its fin up in the air – staying in one area for a long period of time.

IPSS Medical Rescue and KwaDukuza lifeguards launched jet skis  just off Thompson’s Bay, where the whale had drifted, at around 12:30 to investigate.

According to Paul Herbst of IPSS Medical Rescue the whale was coaxed in another direction and guided out to sea.

Thankfully there was nothing wrong with the whale and authorities just made sure it would not get tangled in the shark nets.

The whale was guided through the back of the nets and out to sea.
