An elderly couple had a harrowing experience when they were hijacked in Sheffield on Monday morning.
The couple, who were on holiday from Johannesburg and staying in Durban North, had come to Sheffield Beach around 11.30am.
They were at The Point, near Villa Royal apartments, when a white Toyota Corolla pulled up behind them.
A man allegedly attacked the husband, who was not in the car, while another went to hold up his wife with a knife.
Ballito resident Dionn Joubert, who had taken his mum down to the beach, stopped to help the couple.
“They took watches, cellphones and wallets from the couple before speeding off in the couple’s Mercedes Benz. A resident nearby heard the husband screaming for help and called the police, who were there within minutes.”
Joubert said it was awful to see how shaken up the couple was.
“They had just stopped to enjoy the view and had to go through this. We helped as best we could, given how shaken up they were.”
The Mercedes Benz was recovered at the Gateway Theatre of Shopping an hour later.
