Celebrating sport in Nkobongo
The association hosted its regional selection games on Saturday.
Nkobongo Sports Club development association, endorsed by the department of sport and recreation, hosted its regional selection games on Saturday.
The selected players will represent the association in the district games to take place on September 13 at Deda Sport Fields in Ndwedwe.
Department of sport and recreation co-ordinator Sakha Mhlongo association thanked president Philani Pityo for his commitment to his work.
“I must also appreciate the support from ward councillor Themba Ntuli,” said Mhlongo.
The association has 34 soccer teams, six volleyball, 20 netball, eight basketball, two rugby teams and 54 athletes in its fold.
Pityo said the main challenge they have is that some of the residents in the area do not understand the aim of the association.
“This programme is to uplift the standard of sport in the township and I would like to thank the department for the support we get from them,”said Pityso.
At the beginning of the year the association sent 130 people for training in coaching, refereeing and management.
Umhlali Quarry also sponsored the association with 200 T-shirts.

The following teams have been chosen to represent Nkobongo: in rugby the Jaguar, in volleyball the Gang Bangers, in basketball the Hyllendas, in soccer the TTAC and in netball the Nkobongo Eagles. In athletics the following girls have been selected: Zinhle Ngitha, Samukelisiwe Nqhele, Nozuko Nompungose and Andiswa Mlunji. In athletics boys: Nkosikhona Yide, Thabani Dingi, Phelelani Ngema, Andile Mlungwana and Ngobani Guma.
