Ballito actress in the spotlight

Bottle of Problems is showing at the Seabrooke's Theatre in Glenwood.

Young Ballito actress Shannyn Zorab (19) is already making a name for herself on the professional theatre stage in her own play entitled Bottle of Problems at the Seabrooke’s Theatre in Glenwood.

One year out of school and already Zorab is running her own directing and production company called ‘Crimson Fire Productions’ and has collaborated in the writing and coordinating of her first professional theatre production.

She was a regular in many of her school productions in both acting and dancing – boasting the lead role of crazy Helena in Shakespeare’s Midsummer Nights Dream in grade 10 at Crawford North Coast.

From stage managing to MC-ing Zorab made sure she got involved in any way she could.

Zorab is studying at AFDA, the South African School of motion picture medium and live performance, in Durban towards a three year degree in live performance with the aim of majoring in directing and or producing.

Her passions are film and stage performance.

She says she prefers to be behind the camera directing and producing but her passion still lies in live stage performances.

“I love being able to see the audiences’ immediate response, see how they react and being able to feed off their energy.”

“I have always loved performing and being on stage and in the theatre. I have been dancing since the age of three and performing in drama productions since I was in grade eight. At AFDA we have been very focused on the filming side of things and I missed being on stage. So my friend and I thought why not just write and perform our own play.”

Mikhale Singh and Preven Reddy of Blunt Productions, fellow students at AFDA, collaborated with Zorab in developing a concept. Singh then wrote the script. Bottle of Problems is a dark comedy about two sisters, Kate and Alexis, who are forced to live together again after Kate faces some trouble while working abroad.

Soon after, Kate’s ex-boyfriend breezes back into town, causing further discord between the siblings.

Add a few crazy friends, each with their own agenda, and a game of revenge is born.

Zorab plays Kate and another Ballito actress, Brittany Hurrell, is cast as Alexis.

Go out and support our local talent at the Seabrooke’s Theatre at Durban High School in Glenwood from August 8 to 10. The first night has already sold out.
