New classrooms for special needs school

60% of pupils are orphans.

Tongaat Hullet and Victor Diatz Foundation invested R412 000 towards the provision of infrastructure at Ethel Mthiyane Special School in Sundumbili Township.

The partnership culminated in the handover of two new classrooms in an effort to improve the quality of education at the school. The classrooms replaced two wooden classrooms, that had no proper ventilation and were slowly becoming hazardous.Tongaat Hullet socio-economic development manager Nkonzo Mhlongo said they are committed to improve the lives of people in their communities, infrastructure development and empowerment through education are some of the ways they are able to achieve that.

“We view our contribution towards improving education and the future of our youth as a business imperative,” said Mhlongo.

School principal David Mthembu said the investment by the two organisations will go a long way in creating a learning institution that will empower pupils to meet the growing challenges of the outside world.

“Children with disabilities, particularly in rural areas live with the effects of disability and struggle with a wide range of challenges that can be attributed to the absence of an enabling environment,” said Mthembu.

He said 60% of their pupils are orphans, while 15% hail from child-headed households and 75% of them live with their grandparents.
