Lovemore Chabata obliterated the competition to take first place in the Dolphin Coast Ultra marathon on Sunday September 7. Chabata, a 34-year-old Marianhill resident made quick work of the 50km race in an outstanding time of 03:13:56. “I wanted to win today and I used my endurance from this year’s Comrades to win today’s race. I am aiming for a place in the top 10 in next year’s Comrades Marathon,” he said. In the ladies ultra distance race Nonsikelelo Mbambo (Natal Carbineers) crossed the finish line first in a time of 04:05:43 with Lisa Collett (Everyone Counts) coming in at 04:29:09. Chairman of the Dolphin Coast Striders athletics club, Gary Henwood-Fox was happy with the turnout of more than 800 runners and said the club received many compliments on the day. Munywoki Joseph (Phantane AC) grabbed the top spot on the half marathon podium for men ,in 01:09:03, while Janie Grundling (Westville AC) took the honors for the ladies over the same distance in a time of 01:29:21. The men’s 10km event was a close race with Bonginkosi Zwane (Phantani) storming to victory in a quick 00:30:13,.Sithulisiwe Zhou (Phantane AC) was the fastest female 10km runner crossing the finish line in 00:39:42.
