SMD hosts event to launch 2014 Street Heroes.

The weekend of growling engines, burning rubber and adrenaline was jump started by a lovely SMD Street Heroes cocktail event and auction last Friday night at the SMD Group Showroom.

Guest dolled up to celebrate the launch of the much anticipated SMD Street Heroes event which was to take place on Saturday and Sunday this past weekend.

An auction was held to raise funds for the Ithemba Labasha creche in Shakashead which cares for about 250 orphans every day.

Last year the SMD Street Heroes event raised R37 000 for this initiative and hope to donate much more this year.

SMD CEO Shaun Duminy started off the night with a R40 000 donation for the creche with the total amount of funds raised from the auction reaching R100 000 by the end of the night.

“I am speechless. Thank you so much for thinking of us. Thanks to you the children will grow up different,” said Ithemba Labasha owner Doreen Yengwa.

KwaDukuza Mayor Ricardo Mthembu also addressed the guests saying a few words about why this event is so important for the district.

“We have put forward R800 000. Sport is very minimal in the area so we made it a point to make this event significant. I thank the SMD Group for their faith,” said Mthembu.

The other sponsors of the SMD Street Heroes event included the KwaDukuza Municipality, the iLembe Chamber of Commerce and the Novos Group.
