Ready, steady, read!

Sizani Primary get a reading boost.

The Sizani primary school reading programme pupils celebrated the end of the year on Thursday October 30.

All Soul’s Anglican Church volunteers have been running an English reading initiative with the school’s grade R’s and grade threes all year and treated them to a fun outdoor picnic for their hard work and achievements. Tiffany’s Superspar sponsored the hot dogs, apples, doughnuts and ice cold mineral water for the kids after a morning of fun and games.

Carol Church initiated the English reading project and it follows a proper school structure with a model for each lesson. The programme focuses on reading, writing and spelling.

Teacher Fiona Buthelezi said many of the children struggle with English spelling because they do not get to hear the correct pronunciation of English words at home.

“Our English speaking volunteers help our pupils a lot with the proper pronunciation,” said Buthelezi. Chief coordinator, Diana Dingley said with the grade R’s the focus is on phonics (letter sounds) and they do a lot of repetitive nursery rhymes that help build their basic vocabulary. She said the grade R’s phonetic knowledge will make it easier for them to learn to read in English in grade one.

Assistant coordinator, Averil Warner said the English reading initiative is of great value to the pupils as everything in school from grades four to twelve is in English and a solid vocabulary and understanding of the language equips them to learn and perform better, securing their future.
