Teachers honoured

Empowering teachers to improve their classrooms.

Teachers and principals were honoured at a luncheon sponsored by African Bank at KwaDukuza Town Hall on November 12.

The celebration was for teachers who were part of the KB empower teachers to empower youth program.

They took part in training to encourage a positive supportive caring environment for pupils.

English Literacy workbooks have been developed for grades three to six and there has been a 176% improvement over the last four years.

The teachers do a pre-assessment test to see where their reading level is at the beginning of the term, and then a post-assessment to measure their improvement.

Their classrooms are inviting, with words displayed, pictures, charts and student work, providing an environment that encourages the joy of learning.

Several workshops are held after school hours to encourage the teachers.

Luthuli Museum have helped with a venue to hold the functions, which include a speech contest, poetry contest and spelling bees for 28 primary schools.

Teachers, M Verenia. (Somai-Melville), Thembi Mthembu (Dr B.W.Vilakazi), P. Reddy (R. Padayachee), Dhanamal Govender (Stanger Manor), S. Brijlall (Gledhow), Sivi Chonan (Shakaskraal Primary) received a gift to reward outstanding work.

QB Nkwanyana-Khuthalani and BP Masinga-Mgigimbe tied for third place.

They both are principals at their schools and also are assigned a full time class to teach.

In second place was Anita Moses-Gledhow and first place was tied between R. Singh-Ashville and J. Naidu-Ashville.
