Getting ready for tertiary

Camp helps to prepare kids for transition from school to university.

Protec matriculants enjoyed an inspiring Tertiary Preparedness Camp from January 8 to 12 at Verbara Lodge, near Shakaskraal.

The purpose of the camp was to help the students make the transition from school to university life as smoothly as possible.

The highly successful young couple, Thuli and Ernest Galelekile shared their fascinating and inspiring stories of how they overcame all sorts of challenges in achieving their success. Ernest is a customer director at Unilever and Thuli is the marketing director at Ithala Bank.

Thuli spoke about the world being a stage and it is up to each of us to decide who we want to be.

Ernest has lived by the motto “put yourself out there” by which he means get involved in life, take the initiative, be active, and don’t hold back. These messages became recurring themes throughout the four days.

Ronelle Msomi and Vuyi Zondi from the UKZN spoke about the resources available to students to assist them with the stresses and issues they may face. The central message was that students need to take personal responsibility for their lives and ask for help if needed.

Angy Watson, who is an International consultant in the field, and Lindy Walker, an HR Director at Rainbow, conducted workshops on communication.

Students were exposed to key life skills, including goal setting, problem solving, and personal accountability, again getting the opportunity to practice these skills.

Other workshops included presentations on drug awareness and sexual responsibility.
