“SASSA is not helping us”
KwaDukuza social grant offices only attend to small number of people each day.
Imagine you have been in a queue in a government institution from the early hours of the day and then mid-morning, without being served you are told that only 60 people can be helped, meaning that you have to come back tomorrow.
That is what Nkobongo residents claim happens at KwaDukuza South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) offices.
South African Communist Party executive regional committee member New Mlondo, was one of the complainants and had this to say:
“Even if you write in their suggestion box, you do not get a reply to your complaint. I have written on two separate occasions, complaining about an official who has a bad attitude towards residents but there has been no change to her behaviour and no response from the management,” said Mlondo.
When the Courier visited the offices, an employee by the name of Smakahle Mbatha refused to comment on the accusations and when the journalist entered the premises, he sent security guards to chase him away.
“I have been asked by the management to ask you to leave the premises. You are not allowed to interview residents on the premises,” said the guard.
When contacted, Vusimuzi Mahaye SASSA communications officer said that there were no restrictions on the number of people that can be helped every day.
“I will follow up on this matter and get back to you,” said Mahaye.
Mahaye then referred us to the general manager, Vincent Bulunga, who has not yet returned our calls.
