The shame of torn and worn uniforms keeps many children from flourishing at school, while the inability to pay for a uniform keep others from attending at all. Nhlanhla “DJ Tecknics” Mthethwa says young people should unite and help those who need help.
The Shakaville born DJ has started the Dress a Child campaign to help school pupils with uniforms.
“I met a child on the first day of the school term playing on the streets of Shakaville, who told me he was not going to school because he does not have a school uniform,” said Mthethwa.
Mthethwa is appealing to those who would like to help the children to join him at Oromax Shisanyama in Shakaville on February 1 to donate uniforms for the children.
“So far I have identified about 30 children from poor families. I hope the public will support this campaign and help the kids get dressed for school,” he said.
The children are aged from seven to 13 years, and most of them are boys.
The 2006 ML Sultan matriculate said he is planning to do the campaign again next year.
“Next year it will be different, we will be adding to what the parents have managed to provide for their children. We do not want people to be completely dependent on the campaign but we want to help those who are trying,” said Mthethwa.
