If you are concerned about skin cancer or a particular mole, then get it checked. Why? Because three out of every five melanoma skin cancers diagnosed are first noticed by the person it affects most. Mole mapping is one of the ways you can stay ahead of any cancerous developments. We spoke to Alberlito’s Specialist Dermatologist Dr Ishaan Ramkisson on this useful tool.
What is skin mole mapping?
“Mole mapping is an advanced melanoma surveillance programme and combines advanced technology with the skills of a dermatologist (skin specialist) to accurately diagnose melanoma at the earliest possible stage. It is a tool to assist the dermatologist in assessing moles and is not a “diagnostic” device, hence importance of seeing a dermatologist with experience in mole mapping and skin cancer.”
Why mole mapping?
“Melanoma has been coined ‘the most lethal form of skin cancer’ because it can rapidly spread to the lymph system and internal organs. It causes the greatest number of skin cancer related deaths worldwide. With early detection and proper treatment, the cure rate for melanoma is about 95%.”
What happens during mole mapping?
“The whole body is examined and digitally photographed. The dermatologist then maps suspicious moles from these images for further assessment. Each suspicious lesion undergoes scanning with a specialized camera and microscopic images are taken. These images are of an extremely high resolution and magnification to better analyze the lesion. All of the images are then analyzed, diagnosed and reported on by a dermatologist.
What are the benefits of having mole mapping?
“Mole mapping allows for early, more accurate detection of melanoma. Follow-up checks allow for the comparison of moles, so if you become concerned about a new or existing mole after your initial consultation, you can come back for a spot check where we only examine the mole that worries you. This ensures the correct diagnosis is made and prevents unnecessary removal of normal moles.
