Paddle skiers rescued at night

Late night joint rescue operation brings fishermen safely to shore.

Two paddle skiers were rescued in Salt Rock on Thursday evening around 9pm after they struggled to get back to shore.

Paul Herbst from IPSS Medical Rescue said the paddle skiers launched their craft from Salmon Bay to go fishing in the afternoon.

“The men lost track of time and we received a distress call from a family member,” said Herbst.

He said the men had cellphones with them and rescue services managed to make contact.

In a joint operation between the KwaDukuza lifeguards, KwaDukuza fire department and IPSS Medical Rescue, off-road vehicles were placed on the stretch of beach from Salmon Bay to Salt Rock with spotlights shining on the water to provide some light for the men.

“We had vehicles providing light at Salmon Bay, Willard, Thompson’s Bay amd Salt Rock. It was established that they were closest to the Salt Rock area,” said Herbst.

The paddle skiers made use of this light to successfully get back to shore and out of the water.

Herbst said the men were in good spirits.

“The paddle skiers did not panic and no injuries were reported,” said Herbst.

The men still managed to walk away with some big tuna!
