With technical problems at Eskom’s unit 1 at Koeberg power station, load shedding will be implemented today in stage one from 10am to 10pm.
Koeberg’s unit 1, which was taken out of service on Sunday due to a technical fault on the main generator transformer, is undergoing start-up tests required for synchronisation after the fault on the generator was resolved.
This is according to Eskom’s latest status bulletin in which the power utility warns that the system will be extremely constrained for the rest of the week.
“We expect the unit to be back at full capacity later in the week as it does take some time to ramp it up,” said Eskom in the status bulletin.
“Unit 1 was scheduled to go on a planned refueling, inspection and maintenance outage on February 9. This will go ahead as planned. The outage is scheduled to be completed towards the end of May, after which the unit will return to service.”
Eskom said Koeberg Unit 2 is currently on full power sending out 930 MW to the national grid and ensured that there are no nuclear safety concerns for both units 1 and 2.
