Salt Rock is home to a creative, gentle soul, who masters the unique art of stained glass.
In search of a new hobby, Kevin Selvan’s wife, Lyn, joined a stained glass workshop about 14 years ago.
Little did they know that it would be Kevin who would discover a hidden talent in the art that has been admired since ancient Rome.
“I got it after about three lessons and since then I just loved it,” he said.
Although he had to take a break from the stained glass work due to work commitments, he started up again six months ago and cannot get enough.
“You have to commit to it, there are no shortcuts and you need time to complete a project, otherwise it will never get done.”
He adds that although it is a fairly costly and time consuming art, it is not difficult, (for him at least) and very rewarding.
“The glass can cost up to R10 000 per square meter, although on average you would spend between R800 and R1500 per square meter,” he said.
The glass has to be imported from Europe or America.
“There are thousands of options to choose from, depending on texture and colour,” said the glass lover.
Luckily you generally only need small amounts of glass for a project, therefore the glass does last fairly long.
One of the first objects Selvan made was a Tiffany lamp, which took about 12 hours to complete.
“A Tiffany lamp could be made of about 1200 individual pieces,” which gives an idea of the detail and time that goes into the popular, colorful glass lamps.
‘My favourite projects are windows, because the light that shines through the colours in the glass is amazing.”
Besides working with stained glass, he also enjoys cooking, music, gardening and anything else involving the creation of beautiful things.
“I am a brightly coloured person,” he said, looking at the colourful art and decor around him in his house.
Selvan would like to start offering stained glass lessons from his home to share his passion and love for the art form.
