Court suicide: Prisoner had threatened to kill himself

Prisoner was being tried for rape.

The prisoner who hanged himself at KwaDukuza Magistrate court in Stanger on Thursday reportedly threatened to kill himself should he be transferred to Westville Prison.

According to a court employee, who wished to remain anonymous, the 20-year-old man was being tried for rape and had been making a bail application.

“Apparently he told other prisoners that if he was to be transferred to Westville he would commit suicide,” she said.

At midday. shortly after the court had decided to send the Doringkop man to Westville Prison he asked to use the bathroom.

According to KwaDukuza Station Commander Col Bheki Zondi, he used his shoelaces to hang himself.

He said while shoelaces, belts and other accessories were not given to prisoners while in their cells, when they made court appearances the inmates were returned these items.
