Five steps to a healthy, happy pet
If you have a pet at home, these tips will be very useful!

Owning a pet is a great privilege, but not everyone knows what is good or bad for their pets.
Here are Ziggy Heide’s, owner of Fish, Feather and Fur pet shop in Tiffany’s, Salt Rock, five key items every pet owner should have and know about:
1. Food
Whether you have a pure breed or a pavement special, good food and lots of fresh water is a must.
“As long as the food does not contain allergens, colourants and bulking agents, it should be fine. Also, stay away from food that contains meat derivatives,” said Ziggy Heide, owner of Fish, Feather and Fur pet shop in Tiffany’s, Salt Rock.
It is particularly important that puppies and kittens are not fed adult food.
Because they are growing, they need about twice the nutritional requirements an adult needs, therefore puppy and kitten specific food is crucial to ensure healthy development and growth.
Treats serve as a good training tool and a nice nibble in between meals, but be sure to give healthy treats made for pets, not a cookie or a sweet.
2. Brushing
Regular brushing prevents the fur from knotting and spreads the natural oils throughout the skin.
Brush against the hair at first and then change to the opposite direction, to ensure you brush out all the loose hair.
Ask your vet which brush is best for your cat or dog’s type of fur and brush on a weekly basis.
3. Bedding
“A good bed is key. Make sure the bed has lots of cushioning, to support your dog and keep him or her comfortable. During winter, heavier and deeper bedding is necessary, ” said Heide.
Cats do not necessarily need a bed, as they tend to find a spot they enjoy and whether the owner approves of that space or not, the cat will claim it as theirs.
4. Toys
Toys are crucial to keep pets from getting bored, which causes chewing, scratching and general bad behaviour.
“Dogs need toys that will keep their brain busy and there is a wide range of long lasting toys to choose from,” she said.
Kong and Orca are two dog toy brands that are durable and promise hours of fun for you four legged friend.
Cats are easier to please with toys and are generally happiest with homemade toys, such as a an empty toilet roll or a ball of string or wool.
Remember that cats loves scratching, so to avoid destroyed couches and rugs, get a scratch pad and encourage your cat to use it by spraying some cat nip spray on it.
5. Fleas and worms
Keeping your pet flea and worm free is not only vital for your pet’s health, but for yours too.
Once you have found a flea product that works for your pet, stick to it.
Even during winter, when fleas may not be bugging your pet as much as in the summer, you still need to continue the flea treatment a prevent a major flea influx when summer comes.
According to the SA Veterinary Association, it is important to deworm your pets every 3-4 months and yourself at least twice a year.
