Father, daughters escape near drowning in Ballito

Swift reaction from public saved lives.

A father and his two daughters narrowly escaped drowning in the sea near Clarke Bay, Ballito late on Tuesday afternoon.

Paul Herbst from IPSS Medical Rescue said the father and his daughters went swimming when they got caught in a riptide going out to sea.

“The mother went in and managed to help the one daughter, while the father and other daughter were swept further out to sea.”

Herbst said the stretch of beach had no lifeguards since it is not a designated swimming beach.

“The man waved for help and members of the public rushed in and helped to get the man and his daughter safely back to shore,” said Herbst.

“They were treated on the beach and transported to hospital where they will be treated for near drowning,” he said.

KwaDukuza lifeguards and IPSS Medical Rescue were on the scene within six minutes after receiving the call.

“KwaDukuza lifeguards reacted very swiftly, but we cannot stress enough that people should only swim at designated swimming beaches,” said Herbst.
