Falling wall kills construction worker at Simbithi

Full investigation underway.

A construction labourer was killed when a wall fell on him at a building site in Simbithi Eco-Estate last Monday.

“I cannot say much, because of the current investigation, but the labourer, who was not one of Vijay Ori and Associates’s employees, was busy excavating a pool, when a little foundation wall collapsed and he was buried under the sand,” said Devan Naidoo, structural engineer at Vijay Ori and Associates, the company working on the site.

It was said that the heavy rain from the weekend before had caused the collapse.

The fatal accident happened on the construction site in Quinine Drive, Simbithi.

“All I can say is that a full investigation is underway and the home owners association would like to express their sincere condolences to the family of the labourer,” said Steve van Greunen, general manager of Simbithi.

All Simbithi home owners received the following message on Monday at about 5pm: Dear Owner, we are sad to report a fatality on a building site on the estate. A full investigation is underway, SEEHOA (Simbithi Eco Estate Home Owners Association).

According to Lieutenant Colonel Dieter Fittkau from Umhlali Police, an “inquest docket” has been opened, meaning that accidental or unnatural death is being investigated.
