Spaying myths busted

Today is World Spay Day and we look at the myths surrounding pet sterilisation.

Tuesday, February 24 is World Spay Day and there are many myths surrounding pet sterilisation, which often stops people from spaying or neutering their pets.

Below are some of the myths and the facts as per the Durban and Coast SPCA:

  • My pet’s personality will change. FALSE

Sterilised pets make just as effective watchdogs and are as loyal and reliable as before sterilisation.

  • My male cat will develop bladder problems. FALSE

Urinary and bladder problems are usually linked to diet and can easily be treated and corrected. Furthermore, unsterilised males are vulnerable to prostate disease and perianal hernias.

  • My pet will become fat. FALSE

Incorrect diet results in weight gain, and your vet can advise you on the best food and exercise regime for your pet.

  • My pet’s growth will be stunted. FALSE

Research has proven that this is not true and that sterilised  pets develop and grow into healthy adults.

  • It is good for my pet to have at least one litter.   FALSE

There are no benefits to having a litter.

So, there you have it, your pet will not be harmed in any way by being sterilised, in fact, a sterilised dog can potentially live one to three years longer and a cat three to five years longer.
