Sheffield sinkhole swallows beach buggy

Heavy rain undermines road.

While driving along Sheffield Drive at about 10pm last night in heavy rain, four men drove through what they thought was a puddle, and landed in a six meter deep sinkhole.

Two of the men reportedly had facial injuries and were transported to Alberlito Hospital by Netcare 911.

The beach buggy, which was lying on its nose in the hole, was pulled out this morning.

The sinkhole appeared to have caved in under a recently repaired section of the road, which was clear from the fresh, dark tar that was left arounf the edge of the hole.

The portion of the road has been blocked off.
