Boy saved from drowning at Blythedale

Fisherman and holidaymakers come to the rescue.

A ten-year-old boy was saved from the sea at Blythedale this afternoon, thanks to a fisherman and two canoeists.

The little boy and a group of his friends were swimming at a non-swimming beach near the river mouth close to Jex estate, when he got into trouble.

“I was fishing, when I saw the one boy further away from the other boys and I heard him screaming for help,” said local fishermen, Pramesh Gayapershad.

He said two holiday makers also saw the boy was in trouble, and they jumped into a canoe and paddled out, pulled him into their canoe and rescued him.

KwaDukuza lifeguards reportedly ran about two kilometres across the beach to get there and were followed by all terrain vehicles and jet skis.

IPSS Medical Rescue transported the boy to hospital for observation.
