A man accused of multiple burglaries and the rape of a 56-year-old woman was assaulted by an angry mob in Malende, Groutville on Monday.
Ward nine councillor Nomonde Mthethwa said she asked the police to intervene as soon as she heard about the violence.
“I have been told that he admitted that he and his two friends from Etete did commit the rape,” said Mthethwa.
However she urged residents to not take the law into their own hands, and rather call the police.
KwaDukuza SAPS spokesperson Johannes Khoza they are investigating the matter.
Khoza said that there were also two murder cases in Groutville and Melville last Friday and two arrests have been made.
