Rocky adventures by moonlight

Families explore sea life under the full moon.

Sheffield Beach was full of little lights on Friday night as children and adults took to the rocks for Tidal Tao’s full moon walk.

The night walk was a great start to what will become a more frequent educational night walk on the beach and the response was overwhelming.

Environmental educator, André Steenkamp kept the kids entertained with his exciting and interesting explanations of the rock life that they spotted in the pools.

Steenkamp and the other full moon walkers found cushion starfish, sea urchins, snails and one of his favourite creatures, slugs.

While talking about a particularly colourful slug, Steenkamp could barely contain his excitement at the prospect of showing the walkers the slug that “looks like an Arabian carpet on LSD”.

“The best way to spot rock life, is to lie on your belly in the shallow water, put your head into the water, watch and enjoy,” he said.

So keep an eye out for the next full moon (around May 1) and join in the fun, entertaining and educational full moon walk.
