Ballito land grab, EFF erects shack
More people arrive at unoccupied land to build dwellings.
Last night members of the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) erected a shack on Green Fields farm, overlooking Ballito.
Yesterday the EFF invaded the farm, demanding that the land be given to them.
The EFF provincial member of land affairs, Tobias Mthiyane, said on Sunday that the invasion was part of the organisation’s national programme that was launched on April 6.
He said the organisation was planning something big in KZN for Freedom Day on April 27, but would not reveal more.
The EFF’s Lindani Mthembu said they wanted the land because it was unoccupied.
“We understand that there are people who do not have land so we decided, and the community decided, that we will come here and expropriate the land,” said Mthembu.
The land is owned by a consortium of Dolphin Coast residents and is earmarked for commercial and residential development.
A group of people were dropped off at around 6am on Sunday morning in a white BMW Z5 by a man who the police believes to be a Zimbali resident.
About 30 people arrived on Monday morning to measure out plots and start building shacks.
To their dismay, Umhlali SAPS’s Captain Maharaj informed them that they had no right to be there and the owner of the land was entitled to take down the structure that went up last night.
The group left and regrouped a couple of hundred meters away while one of the land shareholders, Ricky Pissarra and legal occupant, Ian Deetlefs proceeded to take down the structure.
Captain Maharaj said the police would protect the land owners and legal occupants, were they to come under attack.
