A spoonful of humanity

Meet the Soup Mamaz, caring for the community.

A group of eight domestic workers in Ballito are putting their wooden spoons together to cook up a storm for the homeless and hungry.

Since March, the ‘Soup Mamaz’ have been setting up their soup pots in their pretty blue warming bags, once a week in the park behind BP to dish out food to those less fortunate.

Victoria Mkhize, one of the Soup Mamaz said they could not watch people digging in the garbage bins every day, without doing something.

“We do not have anything ourselves, but we want to give them something,” said Mkhize.

And they give them soup, home cooked, veggie soup and some bread, not money, because Mkhize said they do not know what they do with the money.

“They appreciate our soup so much and they are happy when they see us,” she said.

Their aim is to grow the soup kitchen from once to twice a week and to add some music to the feast.

“We want this to be fun and we would like the community to join us,” she said.
