Riding legless

An American soldier who lost his legs will be in town for a motivational talk.

Few people would hop onto a Harley-Davidson, drive around the world, earn three Guinness World Records and give motivational talks, after losing both legs to a landmine.

Former American professional soldier, Dave Barr, has been doing this since the 90s and together with his rough riders team, he is coming to Umhlali All Souls Anglican Church, Salt Rock this Saturday at 6pm, as part of the Chutzpah adventure, which sees them riding 6000 km across South Africa.

Riding the Edge and Riding the Ice are two of his books, describing his incredible journeys, alone on his bike, circumnavigating the world, be it through the Sahara Desert or crossing Russia in the icy Siberian winter. According to Barr, if you are not willing to take risks, you are going nowhere.

He has become a role model for many, disabled or not, as he tours around the world and gives motivational talks and raises money for the world-wide Cheshire Homes organisation, which was started by another soldier, WW2 Victoria Cross recipient Leonard Cheshire.

In addition to being a member of the Motorcycle Hall of Fame museum, Barr was also one of the individuals who were part of the museum’s exhibit, “Heroes of Harley-Davidson,” that marked the 100th anniversary of the founding of Harley-Davidson. Barr was inducted into the AMA Motorcycle Hall of Fame in 2000.

To see this legend in action this Saturday, contact Grant Fowlds on 083 264 1978, Emeric Pilz on 083 301 4721 or the Anglican Church on 032-5254529 for tickets, selling at R80. Funds are going to Project Rhino and Quadriplegic Association South Africa.
