Tunnels filled with living gold
Near Mandeni, this man is working hard to make a success of his freshwater fish farm.
Did you know that in Dokodweni at Mbizimbelwe area, near Mandeni, there are 20 tunnels filled with different kinds of freshwater fish?
Bhekiyise Ngema said he used to work in a seafood store from 1971 until 2002 and decided to start a fish farm, named Sofoco Farm after the biggest river in the Mbizimbelwe area.
He has 12 different kinds of koi- and goldfish, which he raises and sells for a living.
“I wanted something different in our area and, most importantly, I love what I do,” said Ngema.
As a plumber and electrician by profession he bought a second hand water pump and dug a six-foot deep borehole to produce water for his tunnels.
The borehole produces 165 litres per minute and he said he still needs two more water pumps to help the one he has.
“Fish need clean water and space for oxygen, so I use my knowledge as a plumber to ensure that they get what they need,” said Ngema.
He spends most of his time with his fish as he needs to feed them, remove the eggs and place them in a different tunnel, where they are fertilised.
The fertilised fish are then moved to yet another tunnel.
“I want something good for my community and by starting this kind of business, I am trying to show the young people that you can achieve your dreams, no matter how bad your situation might be,” said Ngema.
He said currently his customers need to come and collect the fish because he does not have a car to deliver them.
