Kidnapping message a hoax
A message circulating on social media platforms about an attempted kidnapping has caused panic.
Rumours have been circulating around Ballito that there were two attempted kidnappings at the Spar supermarkets in both the Lifestyle and Tiffany’s shopping centres.
The original message reads: “Please note, there has been a kidnapping attempt at Tiffany’s Spar as well as Lifestyle Spar. Please take good care of your little ones.”
After contacting security services around the town, it has become clear that there is no substance to any of these reports and that it seems to be the work of an internet prankster.
While an investigation into the identity of the individual responsible is still under way, the original tip-off went to JP Viljoen at Viva Security via the Salt Rock Community Whatsapp group, but no one has come forward with any information regarding the allegations and management at both shopping centres are also unaware of any disturbances.
“If these allegations are true, we want to catch this guy and will do everything to catch him,” said Viljoen.
Police are also unaware of the reports and as a result, urge residents to stay calm and not to give this message any attention.
Furthermore, no statements have been made by the mother of the child allegedly targeted, or anyone affected.
Updates will be released once more information has been acquired, but for now parents should maintain the same level of caution they always have when it comes to the safety of their children
