Baby mom to appear in court

Woman suspected of dumping a newborn in a toilet over the weekend will appear in court Tuesday.

On Sunday, May 3, North Coast residents woke up to the horrifying news of a newborn baby being found at the bottom of a toilet pit at Rajkumar’s informal settlement in Belvedere, Tongaat.

A 27-year-old woman was arrested on Sunday evening and is being charged with attempted murder after she allegedly threw the newborn infant into the sewage-filled hole.

Upon arrival of Tongaat SAPS to the scene, community members positively identified the mother of the child, which was confirmed by staff at Tongaat Clinic, where the woman delivered the baby.

The accused will be appearing at Verulam Court, where her trial will commence on Tuesday, May 5.

The police would like to send out a strong warning to expectant mothers who are not in an emotional or financial position to raise their own children, to seek help through the correct, established channels instead of finding their own solutions.

“The first step should be to use contraception, which is absolutely free at local clinics. Or place your child up for adoption and contact the Welfare Department for assistance,” said Warrant Officer Manisha Maharaj-Marie of Tongaat SAPS’s Trauma and Victim Support Centre.
