Swift response leads to arrest of hijackers

Two men arrested for hijacking vehicle in Tongaat.

Tuesday afternoon just after 2pm, Viva Security was contacted by a trucking company about a white Toyota that had been hijacked in Tongaat.

The car, which belongs to UNISA, was stopped by two men carrying a home-made 9mm pistol.

The suspects drove the car for a few kilometers with the driver and his passengers still inside the vehicle, before dropping them off on the side of the road.

JP Viljoen of Viva Security said a trucking company supplied him with a description of the stolen vehicle, as well as the direction it was travelling in, after an employee witnessed the incident.

Viva Security tracked the vehicle to Shaka’s Head, and found it parked outside a private residence.

A joint operation with the Umhlali Crime Prevention Unit lead to the arrest of two suspects.

Viljoen said the response time in this case was crucial to the recovery of the vehicle.

“It took Viva and Umhlai SAPS 41 minutes from receiving the call to the arrest of the suspects,” said Viljoen.

None of the individuals travelling in the white Toyota were harmed, but charges have been filed as the two suspects remain in police custody.
