Teachers protest in Stanger

Schools in Ilembe district closed with teachers staying away from work.

South African Democratic Teachers Union (SADTU) members protested outside the district department of education in KwaDukuza on Friday and did not return to school this morning.

They are demanding the dismissal of Ilembe’s district director Thembinkosi Valakazi.

The teachers said they are not going back to work until Valakazi is removed from her position.

No one from the department of education arrived on Friday to accept and sign the memorandum.

“As soon as someone from the department of education comes to us with a letter confirming that Valakazi has been removed from her position, we will go back to work,” said Simon Dlamini, SADTU chairperson of the Ethekwini North region, who was addressing the teachers.

SADTU members will not return to work until their demands are met.
