Locals excited about the unveiling of the new event.

The Ballito Pro presented by Billabong was officially launched at La Montagne Hotel in Ballito on Friday morning.

There was a buzz in the air as about 150 media representatives, municipal officials and surfing industry leaders awaited the unveiling of the official poster and more information on the surfing event that will hit Ballito’s shores from June 28 to July 5.

The Ballito Pro presented by Billabong is the world’s longest running professional surfing event, with its inception in 1969 in Durban.

Collette Bundy from KwaDukuza Municipality said they are very excited to pass on the baton to Billabong.

“All this started as a pipe dream in 2009 for the municipality and it would not have been possible if it were not for all the people here today that invested in this event,” said Bundy.

KDM mayor Ricardo Mthembu said The Ballito Pro surfing event has grown to become the event of the year for the town.

“We need to salute the people that started this seven years ago and now this event will be a pillar in the area for the generations to come,” said Mthembu.

Colin Fitch, operations manager for World Surf League (WSL) Africa, Billabong marketing manager Chad D’Arcy and Mthembu unveiled the new official poster for the event to much excitement of those attending the launch.
