Education department granted interdict against SADTU

No work no pay principle will apply.

The Department of Education will take disciplinary action against teachers who are taking part in the strike of the South African Democratic Teachers Union members in the Ilembe district.

The department of education’s Ilembe district spokesperson Muzi Mahlabi said they are negotiating with the leadership of the union and urge members of SADTU to go back to school.

He said the department has been granted a court interdict against SADTU members for engaging in an illegal industrial action.

“The no work no pay principle will apply and Thembinkosi Vilakazi is still the regional director in the district,” said Mahlabi.

The strike started on Friday, May 8 when the teachers protested outside the department of education’s office in KwaDukuza demanding the removal of Vilakazi in her position as director claiming that she is unfit for her position.

Meanwhile, the ANC in KwaZulu-Natal called for calm and the prioritisation of learners’ right to education by SADTU and the department of education as they are trying to deal with the standoff that has seen schools closed for two weeks in Ilembe and Ugu Districts.

The ANC said they take the education of children very serious and are concerned when learners are out of school as a result of issues that can be address and be resolved.

They call on all parties involved to find a solution to the problem immediately.
