Man escapes hit men in Salt Rock drive-by shooting

A taxi boss narrowly escaped death.

A silver Mercedes-Benz C180 was riddled with bullets in a drive-by shooting in Salt Rock on Wednesday evening, just before 8pm.

All five shots missed Nhlanhla Lephalo, a Dolphin Coast Taxi Association taxi boss, who escaped uninjured.

He drove from Shakaskraal and put R200 petrol in his car at the Sasol garage, across the road from Tiffany’s shopping centre.

“After leaving the garage, I stopped at the stop sign to turn onto Salt Rock Road, when a white Nissan X-Trail, going towards the N2 freeway, started shooting at me,” said Lephalo.

The Nissan X-Trail made its getaway onto the N2 freeway.

Umhlali SAPS’s Lt Col Dieter Fittkau said there were two or more occupants in the Nissan X-Trail and different heavy calibre automatic weapons were used.

Lephalo said this was the third attempt at his life.

“The first time was on May 24, 2010 when they came to my house in Etete, shot at me and burnt my combi. Then, on October 25, 2013, they shot at my Toyota Tazz at the Luthuli Centre in Groutville, killing two of my friends.”

Lephalo said he had no idea why anyone would want to kill him but felt lucky to be alive.
